Charged for Possessing Uncertified Films?
First, I was wondering how this case of possessing obscene films is linked to the Ren Ci probe. (It isn't.) Then something that makes one wonder what the guy was being charged with.

"He faces six charges - four for possessing obscene films and two for having films uncertified for screening - and may be fined and jailed if found guilty."

Having films uncertified for screening? (That reminds me of the One Nation Under Lee case.) What's wrong with having films uncertified for screening? I just made a home video of a bimbotic cat chasing two white mice. Sssshh.... It's not certified. Better go delete it.

[On a different note, (how) does Singapore law differentiate between "obscenity" and "pornography"? What exactly constitutes obscenity? Sorry hah, Molly neber study Law one.]

Is it just me or is everyone else getting a lot of spam comments from spam LJ accounts lately? :(

Are spam LJ accounts bots or real people? Would it help to turn CAPTCHA on?

(and yeah, just pile on the charges. law seems kinda fun.)

I forgot all about that function. :p Usually don't like to make it difficult to comment. The spam comments were probably from bots -- with LJ accounts. The "commenter" would have an LJ account with a grand total of 1 entry. This entry would sometimes seem grammatical but makes no sense. And would have tags that sound pornographic. Plus the comment would often seem to echo some word or idea that is mentioned in my post, but again makes no sense. They're very irritating.

(Hehe. Yeah, it's fun, isn't it? Before we know it, someone related to the Venerable Monk would be caught with chewing gum or something.)

Commercial Affairs Department officers seizing films?
(Anonymous)

Hmm... What I found interesting is that, according to the Straits Times, it was officers from the Commercial Affairs Department (CAD) that found and seized the films...

Which makes me wonder: is it within the CAD's powers to seize films? And were they searching the apartment specifically for such films or were they searching for evidence related to the Ren Ci probe and incidentally found the films and decided to seize them?

Guess the CAD officers must have had an unlimited search warrant if they were searching for evidence related to the Ren Ci probe but instead seized films...

Let's see. Maybe the films are commercial espionage tapes involving ... erm obscene actions by certain people? And since the films were secretly filmed, they can't possibly be certified?

I am a huge horror fan. Huge. More than seeing the blood and guts fly, I like a good story that gives me the chills. I hate it when I see news like this, because if the ugly side of life is not allowed to screen, all we will ever see is PG-13 horror bullshit and Disney fairytales.

Of course, it makes sense that there are those who want us to stay in Wonderland.

It's entitled "I know what you did last summer - and every second of your life".

Or "We still know what you did last summer" - some things are never expurged if it is not in their favour...

Peasants, on the other hand, make comedies. Such as, "I will always forget what you did last summer."

Sighz.

I don't know about Singapore specifically but most countries don't really bother to think (legislatively) of "pornography" separately from "obscenity". Splitting them meaningfully (I think, personally) requires differentiating between degradation and prurience, but most legislatures are too taken with "dirtiness" and don't exactly grasp that dehumanisation is a separate idea.

Oh ok. Any idea whether we have an obscenity test or is the definition arbitrary?
